DNA of a STRUGGLE

Fragments of a cochlear column tell the story of the struggle for living in Rome from 1870 to the present day in a series of scenes.
The artist Jessi Birtwistle recounts this struggle for living by combining the Roman idea of a continuous narrative with that of the double helixes of DNA: colours, clothes, practices, and languages may change, but the genetic code, that feeds and evolves around the need to find a home and the right to live, does not. Recycled paper, a waste material that is both light and fragile, is used for telling stories of struggle that have been re-proposed, transformed, and adapted to the times, policies, and spaces of the city over the course of the past 150 years.
